Crunchy Mama Update

A few updates:

Breastfeeding has had its ups and downs. We were doing well for a while. By that I mean, I was enjoying it and with the supplementer, he was getting plenty of food. I can never really tell how much breast milk he is getting. But I cherish that time together (at least that time during the day, I'm half asleep in the middle of the night feeding).

I tend not to nurse him when we are out. I do sometimes, but mostly when I have someone else with me. I am too modest to get him set up in public without any cover. But since my b00b is exposed for longer while I'm dealing with the tubing and it takes a few tries to get the tubing and latch right, it is really hard to do under a cover. When I'm at someone's house, I can go into an empty room to get him started and then rejoin everyone. But out in a public place, it is too hard. I once had my mom hold up the blanket to shield us from the other patrons in a coffeehouse, but obviously I need another person for that. But we usually only have one feeding a day outside of the house, if that. So he is nursing most feedings.

We did hit a rough patch the past week. He had a stuffy nose and since it was hard for him to breathe, he didn't latch on right and my nipples were getting sore again. Luckily things are getting better now.

My other crunchy-mama activity now is cloth diapering. We are still using disposables at night and when we are out. But he was in cloth for most of Monday and today. I did my first load of laundry with the diapers and everything came out clean! This weekend I am going to one of those diaper changing events, so that will be our first attempt at leaving the house with cloth diapers.

I have not been able to get our diaper sprayer hooked up. I know it is a "no tools required" job, but really we are so un-handy, that we managed to screw up our toilet trying to do it. But since the first load came out clean with just the dunking method, I am feeling better about it. Of course, E is not such a fan of dunking the diapers, so we'll see if we can get it fixed.

  1. We got our plumber to install our sprayer - we aren't handy either!
Way to go on the breast feeding and cloth diapering. I remember first being really nervous that Isobel would mess up my beautiful cloth diapers but they all came out clean too!
Sounds like you are doing such a great job! How does it all feel?

  2. Sounds like things are going well, Missy! So happy to hear :)

You might want to ask at that CD event...but you may not need to spray/dunk dipes this early. I don't know about with formula, but with BF poo they can go straight into the washer without spraying. When they start solids the fun really starts! :P

  3. It sounds like things are going well. I could never do the whole bf-ing in public thing either... I tried several times at church, but got too embarassed, even within the nursery/family room at the back of the sanctuary. Good for you for keeping at it tho!

A tip for cloth diapers at night... if you have a couple of spare changing pads (you can pick them up just about anywhere. I used ones that were fabric on one side), lay one out under him when you put him down for the night. We did that with Ginny and it saved us having to wash/change sheets every day.

  4. Just a thought, but not only have we never had a sprayer, we don't drunk diapers either. If it was solid enough to shake off into the toilet, then we did that. But otherwise it just went to the washer as is. No problems getting clean either! Now, once he started eating a lot of s olids (close to a year), we did start always shaking it off in to the toilet. But we've survived almost 19mon without sprayer or drunking :)

As for nighttime, we've had way fewer leakages with baby E and cloth, than we ever did with the kid and sposies. We've found wool covers are the most nighttime leak-proof. Altho, with your little guy being so little, I can't imagine he'd pee that much!

  5. Missy I have obviously been MIA for way too long, but finding out you have a new son and that things are going so well for you is a really great surprise! Congrats Mama, I'm so happy for you!
